What is emotion?

What is emotion?
Emotions are innate feelings that are wired into our brains. Paul Ekman, American psychologist, suggests there are 6 basic emotions, joy, surprise, fear, disgust, anger, and sadness. When we are stimulated by the outside world, our emotions get triggered. Our bodies will react and turn emotions into actions. Every emotion drives different actions. For example, when you’re happy, you’ll laugh; and when you feel sad, you’ll cry.
There are no good or bad emotions
We’re used to separating things into good or bad, including emotions. We think of happiness and joy as positive feelings, while fear and anger are negatives. In fact, there is no such thing as positive or negative emotions. They play an important role as they appear for a reason. However, there might be times when you’re not comfortable with how you truly feel. You might want to show the cheerful side of you by suppressing your feelings: trying to stay calm when you’re surprised, smiling while you’re feeling sad, keeping your anger to yourself. If you bottle things up, they don’t just go away. Instead, they burst out and lead to physical and mental stress on the body.
