Zentangle Zen

Shanti - Buddhist Kok Kwong Secondary School

Activity description

Trading exam anxiety for artistic focus through the rhythmic and calming world of Zentangle.

Activity highlight

With the end-of-year exams looming, the committee members wanted to provide a "safe harbor" for students to escape the revision grind. In mid-May, they hosted a 2-day "Zentangle Zen" session, proving that you don't need to be a Da Vinci to find peace through art! The activity attracted a total of 40 students and teachers to join.

During lunchtime, the event venue transformed into a quiet sanctuary. Students were given pens and small square tiles to create their own Zentangle patterns. The beauty of Zentangle lies in its repetition; as students focused on one stroke at a time, their pre-exam jitters began to fade. It was a powerful exercise in turning internal noise into beautiful, structured patterns. The committee also played a short tutorial video to let students reference different patterns. When students had no idea how to draw, they also assisted.

Thinking outside the box! Students threw out the rulebook of symmetry, using freestyle doodles to tap into their ultimate inner peace.

The magic didn't end with the individual tiles. The committee collected every single piece to create a massive collaborative art wall, which will be proudly displayed at the "Wellness Hub." It’s a stunning visual reminder of our school's collective journey toward mental well-being.

Purpose behind this activity

The main objective of "Zentangle Zen" was to introduce students to the practice of Mindfulness. It’s common for students to get "stuck" in future-based anxiety about exam results. Zentangle pulls the focus back to the "here and now.
