“Not Your Ordinary Coffee” Stress Relief Station

Isle of Minds - Heep Yunn School
Arc

Activity description

This “Not Your Ordinary Coffee” Stress Relief Station offered students an immersive specialty coffee experience. The workshop focused on two core elements—hand-drip coffee brewing and latte art—using coffee as a medium to help students explore ways to relax and support their mental well-being.

Under the guidance of a professional instructor, participants learned the fundamental principles of coffee extraction. From selecting coffee beans and understanding flavor profiles to controlling water temperature, grind size, and pouring techniques, they gradually mastered the brewing process and created their own well-balanced, richly layered hand-drip coffee. During the latte art session, participants received one-on-one guidance to practice milk texturing and pouring techniques. By blending smooth, velvety milk foam with espresso, they created classic patterns such as hearts, experiencing a strong sense of accomplishment through the creative process.

Activity highlight

The event was a great success, with students responding with great enthusiasm and full engagement. All participants successfully mastered the skills of coffee brewing and latte art. Many students also shared excitedly that the immersive activity helped them easily enter a state of flow, relieving stress and bringing great mental relaxation.

On the final school day before the Easter break, students gathered around cups of coffee, eyes fixed on the intricate pattern floating on the surface. There was a shared sense of anticipation: a hope that, for a while, the usual worries of school life could be dissolved into the aroma of coffee, and a rare pocket of quiet could be reclaimed.
When the instructor presented beans from different origins, the room changed almost instantly. A wave of fragrance rose slowly settled over the room. Coffee, they realised, is not defined by bitterness alone. If you pause and pay attention, it reveals a symphony of fruitiness, floral notes and a soft trace of sweet chocolate scents that draw the mind away from the clutter.
Next came careful, hands-on work. Students weighted the grounds precisely and made their own pour-over coffee sachets. With only two sachets, many quietly decide who they would share them with. In their hands, the sachets felt like more than a refreshment, they were small, practical gifts that could brew warmth and care.
Students gathered around the instructor, letting daily concerns fall to the side as they focused on the basics. Step by step, they learnt what matters most in making a good cup of coffee, building a steady foundation for the latte art practice that would follow.
When a heart finally appeared in the milk foam, it signalled more than a new skill. It captured a moment of growth—confidence taking shape, and a clear sense of achievement earned through practice.
Under the instructor’s one-on-one guidance, students repeated the movements with concentration: managing the milk’s flow, adjusting wrist angles, and responding in real time to changes in foam texture. Gradually, they slipped into a flow state, fully engaged through sight, smell, touch, and sound—until the noise of scattered thoughts settled into silence.

Purpose behind this activity

Throughout the activity, students engaged all five senses as they immersed themselves in the coffee-making process. By focusing on the present moment, they were able to set aside their worries and enter a state of flow, helping to relieve academic stress and everyday anxiety while “recharging” their mental well-being.

Students also exchanged ideas and shared techniques with one another, strengthening their connections through collaboration and mutual support. As they witnessed each cup of coffee come to life, they celebrated the success of their latte art and the joy of hands-on creation. In a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, they were able to release emotions, share warmth, and gain both a sense of calm and meaningful peer connection.
